Experience

Rutger Vrijen is executive vice president and chief strategy officer for NXP Semiconductors. In this role, he is responsible for corporate strategy in NXP's mission to bring intelligent systems to the edge.

Rutger first joined NXP in 2011 and held various senior leadership roles, including general manager of the RFID business and strategy. Most recently, he led strategy for Secure Connected Edge, focused on Industrial and IoT application markets.

From 2018 to 2024 Rutger was a Partner with McKinsey & Company in Silicon Valley and co-leader of the North America semiconductor practice, supporting clients across the semiconductor value chain on growth strategy and transformation. Rutger started his career as a staff engineer at Sun Microsystems.

Education

Rutger holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Amsterdam, and an MBA from the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. After obtaining his Ph.D., Rutger was a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA in Electrical Engineering, in the fields of quantum optics and quantum computing.

Interests/Hobbies

Rutger is an avid golfer and enjoys other outdoor activities such as hiking, running, skiing and sailing.
