The MCX E series stands out in the industry for its exceptionally broad portfolio of 5 V microcontroller units
(MCUs),
bringing scalable performance, built-in functional safety and long-life reliability to industrial and appliance
designs.
The expectations for modern industrial and appliance systems are higher than ever. Motors must operate reliably
throughout the life cycle, power conversion systems must withstand harsh operating conditions, and connected devices
require protection against cyber threats and physical failures. Achieving this balance of performance, dependability
and
safety is far from simple.
The new MCX E32 family of
microcontrollers balances this equation. This
portfolio of 5 V MCUs combines built-in
hardware
safety mechanisms, advanced security and extended reliability to help engineers slash time and effort needed for
certification without compromising performance and reliability.
Why Choose MCX E32?
Development teams face a gamut of recurring obstacles when building safety-critical or industrial systems.
Certification
can consume months of engineering effort, while demonstrating system reliability across extreme operating ranges can
prove difficult. As a result, many designs still require multiple MCUs to meet both performance and functional
safety.
Build safety-focused, high-performance applications with MCX E Series. Explore our FRDM board
portfolio.
The MCX E32 family provides a
hardware-level approach to developing high-performance systems with functional safety
and
long-term reliability. With ongoing TÜV SÜD SIL 2 hardware integrity certification, a structured path toward
systematic capability 3 (SC3) and integrated EdgeLock® Secure Enclave, the MCX E32 reduces the burden
associated
with
safety and security compliance. Combined with an industrial qualification up to 135 °C and a 10-year lifetime
profile,
this translates into consistent operation that minimizes downtime and reduces the risk of unexpected field failures.

What Challenges the MCX E32 Resolves for You
Modern embedded systems demand high performance, but also proven safety, long-term reliability and streamlined
design.
The MCX E32 family addresses these objectives head-on, offering hardware-level solutions that simplify
certification,
strengthen system resilience and reduce the need for multiple MCUs. The following sections outline how the MCX E32
portfolio helps solve the most persistent pain points in industrial and appliance development.
Ready for Safety Certification
Rather than rely only on certified libraries, the MCX E32 integrates safety into the silicon. Program flow
monitoring,
redundant watchdogs and error reporting provide a hardware-level safety baseline that accelerates certification and
reduces the cost of demonstrating IEC 61508 requirements at the system level.
Rugged and Reliable for the Long Haul
One aspect of reliability is temperature tolerance, but that’s not the whole story. Engineers also need mechanisms
that
safeguard against data corruption and unpredictable faults. That’s why MCX E32 includes ECC on flash memory and
SRAM,
clock and supply monitoring and fault collection with a programmable system response Together, these capabilities
help
preserve data integrity and predictable system behavior under demanding operating conditions, supporting safe
equipment
operation and reducing the risk of unplanned downtime.
More Functionality and Fewer MCUs for System Consolidation
The MCX E32 family builds on the performance, functional safety, security and industrial reliability foundation
established by the MCX E31, boosting
performance for compute-intensive applications with its dual-core architecture.
It
features two Arm Cortex-M7 cores, each operating at up to 160 MHz while incorporating FPU/DSP capabilities and
instruction and data caches.
The two processing domains give developers greater flexibility to distribute demanding workloads across the two
cores,
including networking, motor control and other real-time functions. Developers can also separate safety and
application
functions or distribute different safety functions across the cores, such as running a safety network stack while
cross-monitoring another MCU for SIL3 systems. The MCX E32 goes even further by directly integrating a dedicated
motor
control and power conversion subsystem, Ethernet TSN and up to six CAN FD interfaces. By combining high-performance
compute, mixed-signal control and robust networking, the MCX E32 enables consolidated system architectures that
would
otherwise require multiple devices to achieve.
Supporting resources include up to 4 MB of program flash memory, 128 kB of data flash memory and 512 kB of SRAM with
ECC, along with safety-oriented hardware such as the Fault Collection and Control Unit (FCCU), Self-Test Control
Unit
(STCU), clock monitoring and error-management functions. An EdgeLock Secure Enclave with a secure core and
cryptographic
acceleration further strengthens the platform for connected industrial and appliance designs.

Where MCX E32 Shines: Examples of Real-World Impact
The MCX E32 family isn’t just another
MCU—it’s the engine powering the next generation of safer, smarter and more
connected industrial systems. The MCX E32 can help developers push boundaries in the following areas:
Industrial Automation and Robotics
From high-speed conveyor diverters to precision robotics and drones, MCX E32’s 160 MHz Arm Cortex-M7 core and
integrated
motor control subsystem enable complex motion, real-time safety and advanced networking, all on a single chip. With
support for six CAN FD buses and Ethernet TSN, you can coordinate a factory floor with maximum reliability and
minimal
downtime.
Smart Energy and Power Conversion
The MCX E32 supports applications ranging from home and industrial energy storage to distributed battery systems.
Built-in power conversion accelerators and safety features help designs operate reliably under demanding conditions,
support increased uptime and streamline the path toward safety certification. Safe Appliances and Tools
Imagine HVAC, heat pumps, boilers and power tools that are built to last. With extended temperature range and SIL 2
hardware integrity, the MCX E32 delivers years of reliable, secure operation, even in extreme environments.
Medical, Transportation and Beyond
From medical pumps and ventilators to public transit controls, the MCX E32 is engineered to meet internationally
recognized safety standards (IEC60601, EN50128 and IEC61511). This foundation supports dependable operation in
applications where functional safety is essential.
Built-in Differentiation
While many MCUs approach functional safety by layering certified software libraries on top of general-purpose
silicon,
this approach tends to add to the system's complexity and places more of the certification burden on the design
team.
Meanwhile, safety is built into the MCX
E32’s hardware design, with TÜV-certified SIL2 HW safety integrity and
systematic capability SC3.
Moreover, its dual-core architecture enables developers to build a SIL2 system using a single MCX E32, whereas a
typical
quality-managed MCU requires a 1oo2 implementation with two channels to achieve SIL2. This provides engineers with a
stronger foundation for compliance while reducing the need for external safety mechanisms. To further support
safety-critical applications, MCX E32 includes a comprehensive safety enablement suite including:
- Memory test libraries supplement ECC coverage and enable real-time memory diagnostics
- CPU built-in self-test (BIST) capabilities ensure continuous processor integrity
- Safety documentation and analysis reports streamline integration and certification efforts
Other solutions may depend on less commonly adopted processor architectures which can limit ecosystem support and
long-term scalability. The MCX E32instead is built on the widely supported Arm Cortex-M7, culling barriers to entry.
As
a result, MCX E32 is easier to integrate, better supported by toolchains and more adaptable for future designs.
