As technology evolves at an unprecedented pace, it is critical that the
workforce driving that innovation reflects the diversity of the world it
serves. When women who have overcome barriers become mentors, they create a
multiplying effect by mentoring communities that accelerate the career
development of the next generation of engineering leaders.
In 2024, NXP China launched BrighterMe, an external mentoring initiative
empowering women university students pursuing careers in the engineering and
semiconductor industry. The industry remains underrepresented by women in
technical roles, and BrighterMe addresses this gap. Students are paired with
experienced NXP women engineers in a one-to-one mentorship program focused on
career readiness and technical growth.
BrighterMe's Program Structure and Focus
BrighterMe runs as a structured three-month program. Mentees meet with their
mentors twice monthly for guided conversations that address:
- Technical development and exposure to industry tools and practices
-
Career pathway exploration, including role exploration and early career
planning
-
Soft skills and professional readiness such as communication, networking and
interview preparation
Mentors volunteer their time to share real-world experience, provide
actionable feedback and help students navigate the transition from classroom
to workplace.
While mentees gain clarity on career options, practical guidance on next steps
and confidence to pursue STEM roles, mentors, in turn, refine their leadership and
coaching skills, reconnect with emerging talent and gain fresh perspectives
on evolving student needs and technology trends.
Voices of Mentorship Impact
"This program gave me the courage to pursue my dream. This experience not
only strengthened my technical foundation but also gave me valuable insight
into how professional verification engineers ensure design quality and
efficiency."
—Min (Southeast University, Master in IC Engineering)
"I am deeply grateful to my mentor for her invaluable guidance. At first, I
was uncertain whether to pursue a path as an IC Design Engineer, FAE or move
into sales after graduation. Through many thoughtful discussions with my
mentor, I gained a clear understanding of the distinctions between these
roles within the semiconductor industry. This process has provided me with
much greater clarity, and I now feel confident about how to map out the
first few years of my career."
—Yi (Southeast University, Master in Electromagnetic Field and Microwave
Technology)
"Creating real value in someone’s life is one of the most rewarding
experiences."
—Na (Product/Test Engineer Manager, Tianjin, China)
"It’s rewarding to connect with the new generation of university students,
as it offers a valuable opportunity to understand how they think, act, and
plan for their career development."
—Wuxia (CTO FEI Asia Modeling Director, Beijing, China)
Looking Ahead to a Brighter Future
Built on the belief that community and mentorship drive change, BrighterMe is
scaling across China in 2025 with expanded registration, joint soft-skill
workshops, online learning modules and a formal graduation to celebrate
achievements. As the program extends to more NXP sites, NXP China remains
committed to investing in the growth and empowerment of young women engineers
and supporting a more inclusive global technology community.
